My name is Nila, I am the spouse of His Excellency Mr. Umar Hadi, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of Korea.
제 이름은 닐라입니다. 저는 주한인도네시아 우마르 하디 대사의 배우자입니다.
One of my most important and memorable duties as the Ambassador's spouse is to introduce my country through its beautiful Culture, Art, Dance, Music, Traditional Attire, Culinary and most of all the kind and friendly Indonesian people.

I am a big supporter of Cultural Exchange between our two countries. It is my sincere hope that through this kind of Exchange, the friendship between Koreans and Indonesians will bloom even more.

And now as the first chapter, I would like to introduce to you all, one of Indonesia's most well known, young performer, most outstanding songwriter, actor and also a rising star who received numerous award, including an Award as Favourite Indonesian Artist in Seoul at the VLIVE Awards V Heartbeat in November 16th, 2019 at the Gocheok Skydome and he also sang one of his songs in Korean on November 9th, 2019.

His slow-burning noughties R&B sound simmers with alchemic elements from crackling neo-soul, nostalgic hip-hop and indie, seamlessly blended with his honeyed vocals, introspective lyricism and rolling beats. The artist has stepped into the spotlight as one of Indonesia’s fastest rising stars, and is now making his foray onto a global platform as he teeters on the cusp of his first international album, out in 2021.

Raised on soul legends Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and Brian McKnight, in his early years, self-taught Afgan(full name Afgansyah Reza) grew up a shy individual finding solace in music, slowly gaining confidence in quiet karaoke rooms. One day, in a lightning-strike of serendipity, an impromptu performance of John Legend’s “Ordinary People” – which has since gone YouTube(viral) led to a label VP overhearing his performance and offering him a record contract on the spot.

His debut album, Confession No.1, dropped back in January 2008, with his follow-up coming a couple of years later with The One – and to date, the artist has five solo albums under his belt, racking up over 39 million Spotify streams, with over 1 million listeners across a staggering 79 countries just in 2019. Since then, the wunderkind has been honing his vocal prowess and sharpening his arsenal of instinctive songwriting, leading to the next chapter in his musical journey with highly-anticipated album Wallflower – one he admits is about “discovering yourself through love”. Simmering synth-led lead single “Say I’m Sorry” sets the tone for the record, which undoubtedly marks some of his most truthful music to date.

“The song is about a breakup,” Afgan reflects. “A moment when you realise that you’ve taken someone that you love for granted. You can’t rewind time, but right now you’re just remembering the good times and how much you loved this person. But it’s too late; you’ve missed your chance.”

In a move that will no doubt expand his global influence, Wallflower will also feature “M.I.A.”, a buzzy collaboration with Hong Kong-hailed multi-hyphenate Jackson Wang (of K-Pop boyband Got7). Born from a chance meeting after Afgan performed at V HEARTBEAT V Live Awards 2019 in Seoul, the collaboration will showcase a harmonious fusion of their crooning R&B vocals.

Much of the album is also born of Afgan’s own tumultuous relationship with his mental health, with lyrical inspiration derived from some of the empowering self-help books that have helped him in darker times. “I‘ve been battling anxiety and panic attacks for years, so I wrote “Hurt Me Like You” about it,” he explains. “Nobody can hurt me more than my own self. I really want to change the stigma around mental health, and in Indonesia, it’s still considered a taboo to talk about it. If we became more happy and at peace with ourselves, I think everything would be better.”

In the last three years, Afgan has sold out concerts in a multitude of Southeast Asian countries; performed at Korea’s Yuseong Hot Springs festival in front of a 30,000-strong audience as well as iconic Singapore festival Hyperplay alongside Nick Jonas; scooped an array of illustrious music awards, and even made international waves taking to the stage at a Sofar Sounds in San Francisco. There is no doubt about it, Afgan is poised for success, on the precipice of joining other Indonesian contemporaries who have broken the United States, with the likes of Rich Brian and singer-songwriter Niki making waves all around the world.

“I’m so proud to hear their music. A lot of people aren’t really familiar with Indonesia, and I think there’s a lot of talent here and we just need a boost. I think that’s why I look up to artists like Rich Brian, because he’s giving us an opportunity to be heard. It’s inspiring and I want to contribute to the movement in hopefully bringing more Asian artists to light.”

But for now, Afgan’s greatest commitment is to making soulful music that will move fans in the most restorative way. “Every time I hear music, it heals me in some way, even if it’s just for those five minutes,” he muses. “I want to make music that makes other people feel the same way.”
